To Trace the Lines of Reciprocity

Already existing elements were highlighted with gold leaf in order to bring attention to previous marks and mark makers, and these marks informed the shape and course of the drawing.  It leapt from the floor – to the wall - to a wire - to the exposed elements originally hidden beneath a (now non-existent) drop ceiling, ultimately catching wind and playing with the air system above.

Arena 1 Gallery

I was invited to make work for a show based on gravity in Los Angeles. Being Available in Response was a tracing “mashup” of different areas of the gallery’s floor. Selected markings on the floor were brought into focus with gilding, revealing an uncanny map of layers upon layers, drawing downwards over time and previous histories, and simultaneously inventing a new topography in present tense.

Pendulum Drawings

Pendulum Drawings

2011

Headlands Center for the Arts, Studio

These Pendulum Drawings were made in my studio as explorations of time, particularly, the moment. Modified glass orbs filled with loose pigment were activated manually and with vibrators. I considered the objects my dance partners. The process was videoed from above and the footage was incorporated into a 2-channel video work. The residues of these dances are these drawings.

I made this work while in graduate school at CCA. I affixed muslin cloth to the cobblestones with rabbit skin glue highlighting in 3D the history that literally lie beneath our feet. The work had a later installation in which the cloth hung in space, with the debris collected from the street affixed.
